The exhibition presents 70 major works selected from the family archives and private collections, dating from 1923 to the early ‘70s.

Jaroslav Rössler, now recognized as one of the preeminent historic figures in Czech and world art history of the 20th C., was born in Smilov in 1902. He died in Prague at the age of 87 years, having lived — and created — throughout almost every important art movement from the late flourishing of Symbolism in Central Europe to the emergence of psychedelic vision in the late 60’s and ’70s. The exhibition at Artinbox Gallery presents 70 major works, comprising Rossler’s photographs, drawings and paintings, dating from 1923 to the late ‘60s and early ‘70s.

Rossler was fifteen years old when he became an apprentice in the atelier of Frantisek Drtikol, an excentric master photographer already famous in his own time and one of his early mentors. It was a era of turmoil and change in the art world. A great deal of information in the form of magazines and books in the Drtikol studio, as well as exhibitions and theatre, all had a great influence on this young person full of new impressions, who had come from the small Bohemian town of Smilov to the great Central European capital of Prague. In 1917, in the exciting atmosphere of the modernist Prague artists‘ scene, he began to learn the techniques of lighting and printing. He also began drawing, painting and photographing for himself, compositions of the highest taste and insight. Already at the age of 21, having thoroughly absorbed the philosophical and ideological concerns of his time, he created Cubo-Futuristic gouaches and photographs. Abstraction, in its many forms, remained for Rossler the central aesthetic concern throughout his life.

Rossler absorbed key elements from the avant-garde: German Expressionism, Dada, Italian Futurism, Cubism, Russian Constructivism and from France — Surrealism. In Prague, the unique Czech artist group Devetsil (nine forces) was founded in 1920 by the poet Viteslav Nezval and the artist-writer Karel Teige. Devetsil brought modernity in all its forms to fuse into what was called Poetism. The philosophical and ideological presuppositions of this movement were profoundly influential for all aspects of design, typography, art, architecture, and photography — especially in collages, poems and photomontage. Jaroslav Rossler was invited by Teige in 1923 to be one of the youngest artist members of Devetsil, the only photographer. In 1933 his works were included in the Devetsil exhibition at the Rudolfinum, with a selection of experimental and abstract works, compositions characterized by flat geometrical surfaces and constructions of light and shadow, highly demanding works which formed a form of poetic constructivism.

From 1927 to 1935, Rossler established himself in Paris with his wife Gertruda, whom he had met at Drtikol’s atelier, and his only daughter Sylva (born in Prague in 1926); he supported them by work at the advertising studios of Manuel Freres, Studio Piaz and Lorelle. His advertising photographs are now regarded as works of art.

Rossler’s private — and continuous — creative experimentation after the end of the war, until his death in 1990, form a fascinating oeuvre of imaginary landscapes, abstract light compositions, negative and multiple prints, solarizations and images made through a crystal prism. In every composition is expressed a kind of truth — a human truth, philosophical truth, intellectual truth, aesthetic truth, a universal truth. In all this truth, there is an immense amount of beauty – profound and compelling.

Suzanne Pastor, Prague, September 2017

Artinbox Gallery
Perlová 370/3, Dům v Kisně
110 00 Praha 1 – Staré Město
Czech Republic

otevřeno: úterý, čtvrtek: 16.30 – 18.30 hod., nebo na vyžádání: +420 777 748 433 / open: tuesday, thursday: 4.30-6.30 p.m., or by request: +420 777 748 433

tel.: +420 777 748 433
nadia@artinbox.cz
www.artinbox.cz

[1,3,10
