In the upcoming months, he will be exhibiting his works at the 57th Biennale of Contemporary Art in Venice and at a solo exhibition with Anna Zemánková at the Cavin-Morris Gallery in New York. In the last fifteen years he has been presented at exhibitions dedicated to art brut and thematic exhibitions at the House at the Stone Bell, MuMo, DOX, and Artinbox Gallery. His parents worked at Czechoslovak Railways – his mother as an accountant, his father as the head of the supply depot. Being the only child, he was paid extra care by his parents. He escaped this kind but constraining bubble when he finished elementary school and started studying in Nymburk, 75 km away, at an electro-technical apprentice school (1977–1982). Here he experienced absurd drill, but also tried out ways how to get around the system and create space for personal freedom. For example, he wrote for himself absurd excuses, which were surprisingly accepted. This encouraged him to test the limits further. A radical change occurred during the compulsory military service (1983–1984), when he suffered from depression and insomnia as a result of stress. After a few day absence of sleep, hallucinations occurred and the young man was hospitalized at the psychiatric ward. The inappropriately chosen psychopharmaceuticals made his condition even worse. He was diagnosed with simplex schizophrenia, characterized by desocialization, self-closing, etc. Luboš Plný then began to intensively devote himself to self-study of psychiatry and medicine.

After the military service he worked for six years as an electromechanical technician at Czechoslovak Railways. At age 27, he was granted invalidity pension. He moved to Prague and worked as a housekeeper at the Fashion House, a shop assistant in a second-hand bookshop, a guard at the Pecka gallery in Vyšehrad, a painter of tin soldiers, etc. He was attracted by the world of fine arts, he studied the history of art and learned to draw. In 1987 and 1988 he tried to get accepted into the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. After failing for the second time, he chose a peculiar method of attending classes at this school anyway – he became a model here, and he engaged in doing so for as long as regular studies would have normally taken, that is six years. At that time, he intensively improved his body and worked on the practical and theoretical parts of the project: he studied art history and then compared the famous works of world art with his own rendition as a model, having himself photographed in these positions (the author of the photographs is František Vaňásek). For the project he obtained a grant from the Centre for Contemporary Art. Luboš Plný’s application for granting of a non-existent title of Academic Model was based on the recommendations of many experts, including personalities of the Czech art scene, artists, educators, critics, and doctors. In 1999 his application was approved by the Art Council and in 2000 Doc. Jiří T. Kotalík bestowed this title upon him at the final ceremony at St. Agnes Convent.

In a similar way, Luboš Plný systematically worked on other conceptual projects, but this can be described as the most sophisticated and also most physically and time demanding. At the Artinbox Gallery he is publicly presented for the first time ever. Since then, Luboš Plný marks all his works by the authorial stamp “Academic Model” and he values them more than his later anatomical drawings. However, it was these drawings that brought Luboš Plný world fame.

Other significant changes in Luboš Plný’s life and work was the pregnancy of his partner Lucie, the birth of his son Vincent (2005), the subsequent marriage (2007) and divorce (2012). These and other similar events are dealt with in his “anatomical self-portraits” and unconventional journals. At the exhibition we present, among other things, the last collage – a triptych that refers to the thyroid gland surgery, which the artist underwent in 2006. He had photographic documentation made from the operation and included it in the drawings. This is the last completed work on which the artist was still working on the day of the opening of our exhibition. Unfortunately, it was not possible to exhibit the work for more than a few days, as this drawing was intended for the exhibition at the Cavin–Morris gallery in New York. Subsequently, this triptych was replaced by another one, dedicated to a heart transplant, which this time the artist did not undergo himself – here he only gave form to his fascination with the possibilities of modern medicine.

In his drawings, at the border of conceptual art and scientific project, Luboš Plný breaks the body into thin, horizontally-led sections, in which he meticulously records each of its layers – the skin, the muscles, the bones, the vascular system, and the individual organs. Into the fine labyrinth of the coloured ink drawings, sometimes covered by layered acrylic painting, he glues clippings from fashion magazines or atlases, but sometimes also “exhibits” of the experiments carried out on his own body. His work demands total active deployment: He applied the medical material with traces of his own blood in the artistic record of the treatment of rabies after being bitten by a stray dog; at another time, he created a year-long calendar from yarns of textile fibres from his belly button, accompanied by detailed records of the factors that might have influenced their “quality”; in another case, he set in his artwork a laboratory bowl with the ashes of his own late parents. Luboš Plný’s “assemblages” use different types of view: They combine a horizontal cut with a side view, while some fragments (especially the head or genitals) are dramatically zoomed. The individual works refer to each other and describe in detail the course of important events in the artist’s private life: The birth of his son, the thyroid surgery, the death of his parents… Luboš Plný transforms both mental and physical suffering, but also the physically experienced pleasure (a series of erotic toys: Self Made Sex Shop) , into art projects through which he tries to grasp the finality of his own physical existence and control its limits.

The exhibition also presents a series of portraits where the artist stitched his face and hands without anaesthesia, so that he could feel the intensity of the slightest movement of his head all over his body, while documenting the whole process in photographs (by Vladimír Štěpánský). The artist returned to these portraits after many years. Last year, he had himself portrayed in the same positions, and then linked the images from both periods in order to map the evolution of his own aging. For Luboš Plný, the factor of time is crucial. Each of his works is a sort of diary record, in which there is the beginning, the completion, but also every pause in the work, marked with the exact date, hour and minute. Besides, Luboš Plný does not measure the course of his own life in years, but in the number of days he has lived. The name of the exhibition is also derived from this. On the day that Luboš Plný received from Doc. Jiří T. Kotalík the title of Academic Model, he was 13677 days old. On the day he completed the work on the thyroid drawing and introduced it at our opening, which was once again prefaced by Jiří T. In 2016, he ranked with this photographic series among the finalists of the prestigious FEP FETA Award in Amsterdam.

¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨

Artinbox Gallery, Perlová 370/3, Praha 1 – Staré Město, otevřeno: úterý, čtvrtek: 16.30 – 18.30 hod., nebo na vyžádání: +420 777 748 433, nadia@artinbox.cz www.artinbox.cz

Luboš Plný: *13677 +20242

12 April–26 May 2017

Curated by: Nadia Rovderová, Terezie Zemánková
The exhibition will be opened by doc. It covers Luboš Plný’s work from its beginnings to the latest works created specifically for this exhibition in 2016 and 2017. It is a peculiar diary that maps the artist’s life as does the artist himself – as a specific “life concept”. Despite being placed in art brut, Plný is in his essence an intellectually complicated conceptual contemporary artist par excellence. Alongside Plný’s famous paintings, we will also show his photographs, texts, assemblages, collages, and objects.

Luboš Plný (*1961) is nowadays probably the most famous representative of Czech art brut in the world. His works are represented for instance in the collection of Francois Pinault in Paris, in the collection abcd Bruno Decharme, as well as in the gallery Christian Berst, Paris, in the collections of Galerie Cavin – Morris in New York and the Center Pompidou, and others. In the Czech Republic, his work is regularly exhibited at thematic group exhibitions (Museum Montanelli, DOX, Artinbox Gallery, etc.).

The exhibition is complemented by photographs of Martin Watch, who portrayed Plný as part of the series Jedineční (The Unique). In 2016, he ranked with this photographic set among the finalists of the prestigious FEP FETA Award in Amsterdam.

Photo: Luboš Plný: Self Portrait, 2016

[1,3,10
